[Topic]Today, many people believe that smartphones and social media are essentially destroying our generation. [Restriction]The biggest worries are that technology and social media are leading to a lack of communication and mental health problems. [Exhibit]For example, in the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation ?” journalist Jean Twenge expresses her concern about how smartphones and social media have “changed every aspect of teenagers’ lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health”. [Analysis]Twenge’s view is accurate regarding smartphones causing significant changes. It is true that smartphones have affected our mental health and communication skills. However, we cannot say smartphones are the sole cause of these negative changes, as other factors such as lack of sleep, stress of daily life, and experiencing traumatic events are huge factors in mental health. [Conclusion] While smartphones and social media can be held somewhat responsible for changes is communication and mental health of our generation they are not the sole factor as the world we live in is drastically changing as well.
