MLA and Surface Level Revision

Today, while working on MLA and surface level revision I focused mainly on comma use. In project 1 I had a lot of issues with missing commas and run on sentences. In the project 2 revision process I looked mainly for sentences where I needed an introductory comma, and I also looked for run on sentences that needed a comma splice. I noticed in my essay that I did not use many commas, and that there were many run on sentences. After rereading it a few times, and picking out sentences that sounded strange, I was able to recognize where commas were needed, and I made sure to add them correctly.

Device Diary

When we first met, we played a lot of games such as temple run and candy crush. At the beginning, we would watch a lot of youtube and take a lot of pictures. As the years went on, I have been dropped more times than I can count, and got a little scratched up. However, I have a new screen and case now, so I am doing well.

Life now is a little different. A lot of the time we scroll on social media mindlessly, which gets pretty boring after a while. I wish we would do something else once in a while. We listen to a lot of music, and sometimes it’s the same few songs over and over again. We watch a lot of Netflix and talk to our friends which is fun.

Social Media and Self Prewriting

The prewriting strategy I used was the traditional outline, and I referenced Little Seagull to see how to set it up. This was somewhat of a new strategy for me, because in the last project I used a web for pre writing. I liked this style and thought it was effective because I was able to get all my ideas out, and figure out which resources I will be using. I think this will be helpful to me when writing the essay.

Chunking Annotation

While using the chunking annotation method I highlighted and bracketed claims and underlined evidence or arguments that could be used to support that claim. I did not do much extra annotation because I had highlighted or underlined most of the paper. Some of the pros for this process were that I feel like I was able to find all of the claims and understand the writers main argument. However, some cons would be that I felt the process to be very cluttered and I was only focused on finding the claims. Personally, I don’t think this style works the best for me and I felt I would have been more efficient with another method.

TREAC Paragraph

[Topic]Today, many people believe that smartphones and social media are essentially destroying our generation. [Restriction]The biggest worries are that technology and social media are leading to a lack of communication and mental health problems. [Exhibit]For example, in the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation ?” journalist Jean Twenge expresses her concern about how smartphones and social media have “changed every aspect of teenagers’ lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health”. [Analysis]Twenge’s view is accurate regarding smartphones causing significant changes. It is true that smartphones have affected our mental health and communication skills. However, we cannot say smartphones are the sole cause of these negative changes, as other factors such as lack of sleep, stress of daily life, and experiencing traumatic events are huge factors in mental health. [Conclusion] While smartphones and social media can be held somewhat responsible for changes is communication and mental health of our generation they are not the sole factor as the world we live in is drastically changing as well.

Navigating Social Media and Real Life

“The ability to understand how context, audience, and identity intersect is one of the central challenges people face in learning how to navigate social media” (Boyd 30).

“But more often than not, teens talked about wanting to have a space where they weren’t constantly scruitinized by adults and peers. By becoming anonymous and being an invisible part of a crowd, these teens knew that they weren’t building a reputation within the site”(Boyd 43).

“Teens are struggling to make sense of who they are and how they fit into society in an environment in which contexts are networked and collapsed, audiences are invisible, and anything they say or do can be easily taken out of context” (Boyd 53).

Quiet Reflection

This weekend I sat in my hammock outside for about 15-30 minutes. it was in the morning so it was a little bit cold out and there weren’t a lot of people around. The time went by pretty quick, but I think that part of that was because I was still pretty tired and not really focusing on anything. I think it went pretty well as I was not really thinking about my phone during that time, however I got a little bored at some points. I do relate to Turkle’s TED Talk when she discusses how we as people don’t like being alone. During this activity I found it a little awkward to be outside by myself with no one to talk to. Since we are so connected by technology in todays society it can feel strange and almost uncomfortable when we are alone by ourselves.

Connected but Alone Response

In Sherry Turkle’s TED Talk “Connected, but alone” she discusses the disadvantages of modern technology and how it is affecting our communication and conversations today. Turkle argues that we are substituting communicating through technology for real human connections and conversations, and as a whole it is making it harder for us to talk to each other.

For example, Turkle talks about an 18 year old boy who talks about wanting to be able to have a real conversation at some point. She mentions how this is a result of utilizing technology such as texting to replace actual conversation because it is easier to control. As a result, when people have face to face conversation it is often awkward for them with little communication.

For the most part I agree with Turkle’s claim that people’s use of technology has made it harder to form connections and have meaningful conversations. I have seen it happen with people around me. However, I also believe that people want to be able to have more meaningful conversations now as they realize technology sometimes takes that away.

Podcast

Music Used: “Stage 1 Level 24” by Monplaisir

Rethinking the essay into podcast format was a little bit difficult at first. Prior to starting the podcast I set up audacity so that was helpful. I think drafting the script of the podcast was the hardest part because I had to get away from the format of the essay, and condense it. However, once I scripted the podcast and did a few drafts of it it was pretty easy to get started. I would estimate that it took me about two hours for figuring out the software, drafting the podcast, actually doing the podcast, and making edits to it.
